Otterwick consulting office

Our Company

Built for the
complexity ahead.

Otterwick was founded on a straightforward idea: well-run businesses need clear thinking more than they need impressive presentations.

Our Story

Where Otterwick came from

Otterwick was established in Hong Kong by a small group of commercial practitioners who had spent years inside mid-size businesses watching capable management teams make poor decisions — not because they lacked talent, but because they were working without adequate information or structure.

The firm's name comes from a navigational point off the Scottish coast — a quiet reference to orientation through fog, which felt apt for the consulting work we set out to do. Our engagements are designed to help clients understand where they actually stand before they decide where to go next.

Over time, we narrowed our focus to three areas where structured consulting input produces reliable value: contract management, expansion planning, and performance measurement. These are areas where companies frequently outgrow their existing practices and need external discipline rather than internal improvisation.

We operate from Central, Hong Kong, and most of our work is with businesses that are past the early-stage and approaching decisions that carry real commercial weight.

Mission

To help Hong Kong businesses make better-informed decisions at the moments that matter most — by bringing disciplined analysis and clear communication to complex commercial questions.

Values

  • Clarity over complexity in every deliverable
  • Commercial honesty, including about limitations
  • Respect for the client's existing knowledge
  • Consistency between what is promised and what is delivered

Approach

We scope narrowly, execute carefully, and document thoroughly. Our reports are written for decision-makers, not auditors — they are direct, prioritised, and actionable.

How We Work

Quality and professional standards

These are not aspirations — they describe how every Otterwick engagement is structured and delivered.

Written scope before every project

No engagement starts without a written scope document signed by both parties. This protects the client from unexpected costs and the consultant from scope ambiguity.

Named consultant continuity

The consultant introduced to the client at the start of the engagement remains the primary point of contact and responsible deliverer throughout.

Confidentiality framework

Mutual NDA signed before information exchange. All client materials handled under strict internal access controls. No use of client data without written consent.

Fixed timelines with check-ins

Each engagement has a defined timeline. Structured midpoint reviews allow clients to redirect focus or flag new information before the final deliverable is produced.

Conflict of interest policy

We do not work with competing businesses in the same sector simultaneously. Any potential conflict is disclosed before an engagement is accepted.

Debrief upon delivery

Every project closes with a structured walkthrough of the deliverable. Clients leave with a clear understanding of the findings and the options available to them.

Commercial Perspective

Consulting grounded in commercial reality

Business consulting in Hong Kong operates in an environment shaped by a distinctive combination of common law tradition, regional trade relationships, and high-velocity commercial activity. Companies in this market face contract complexity, expansion opportunities across the Asia-Pacific, and the challenge of maintaining operational clarity as they grow.

Otterwick's three core engagements address the areas where this complexity most often creates avoidable problems. Contract portfolios accumulate faster than they are reviewed — and the terms within them frequently diverge from current business conditions. Expansion plans are often pursued on the basis of enthusiasm rather than structured feasibility work, leading to under-resourced entries into new markets. And performance measurement frameworks, where they exist at all, frequently measure activity rather than outcomes.

Our practitioners bring experience from within commercial organisations — not just advisory firms. This means we understand the organisational constraints that shape what a recommendation needs to look like in order to be implementable. A finding that cannot be acted upon is not a useful finding.

We work in English and are well-positioned to support organisations operating across Hong Kong's international business community. Our office in Central is convenient for client meetings, and we structure our engagements to minimise demands on leadership time without reducing the quality of the output.
